Below are names and numbers of car rentals
on St. John. Some rental homes on our hilly island require 4-wheel drive vehicles to navigate the terrain. The most important thing to remember is that we drive on the left here.

If you feel comfortable with driving on the left and backing up onto the barge, you can also pick up a rental car at the airport on St. Thomas and drive to the car ferry (“the barge”) in Red Hook. Please note, not all rental companies allow their cars to be taken to St. John, but Budget Car Rental does, and it is located right at the airport.

Dependable Car Rental will allow their cars to go to St John also, but do not provide service of vehicles on St John if it were to break down. They are 3 minutes from the airport and offer a shuttle to and from. 1-800-522-3076

Three companies currently offer daily service between Enighed Pond, St. John and Red Hook, St. Thomas for vehicles. A car ferry, or car barge, takes cars between St. Thomas and St. John! The driver and passengers ride along with the vehicle too.
Car Barge Information
First thing to know about is the Port Authority Fee
Pay at the booth before you enter the parking lot at Red Hook
$3 per Car, small SUV, Motorcycle; $4 per truck, van, large SUV.
Get your ticket and drive in, there will be someone to show you which lane to get in. Note that you will back your vehicle on to the ferry.
The fare for the car barge is paid once on the actual barge. Tickets can be purchased for a one-way trip, or a round-trip fare. Tickets are not interchangeable between the three car barge companies. If you purchase a round-trip ticket, it is only good for the barge that issued it.
The Red Hook ferry location services both passenger ferries and car ferries, but there are two separate docking areas for each type of ferry, with separate well-marked entrances. Arrive as early as possible before the car barge departure time you hope to catch. It fills up fast.
