Sometimes it seems there aren’t any houses left on St John – they’ve all become villas. Well, in the era of magnificent villas we offer a cute captain’s cottage (the cottage is cute, not the captain). It has two main claims to fame; one is a view that elicits gasps of awe and delight as one walks onto the front deck for the first time and sees the BVI laid out to the horizon and beyond . Islands Magazine declared this same view to be the world’s best from which to watch sunrise on the morning of the new millennium. |

On the same property is the abode of Capt. Peter (author of the St. John classic "Adrift on a Sea of Blue Light") built for Dorothy his wife and mate aboard their gaff ketch "Breath." Miss Dorothy also founded the Pine Peace School, with a large cast of assitants, now know as the Gifft Hill School. |

| After 30 years afloat on Breath and 50,000 miles, she was owed big time, so with the help pf their sons and many friends, Peter built our house. Recently, they built this cottage--small by villa standards but nice enough for sailors. |

Until very recently the road was unpaved and so rough that a lot of people wouldn’t consider braving it. But at long last the road has been paved – to federal highway specs no less. What used to take 20 white-knuckle minutes now takes four minutes flat. It’s easy as an elevator, up to cool mountain air. At 800 ft elevation, the house looks down on the soaring hawks that frequent the dry forest – and there’s not a neighbor in sight.
